Les Miserables AU - Little Talks (Part 2)
Even the pounding of his heart filling the soundwaves of his mind do not allow him to ignore the familiar, amused laugh. “You could have done without bragging about me,” he hears the tease clearly. He flinches and closes his eyes, but his friend is still in his vision—shoulders shaking, pinching the bridge of his nose as he weakly attempts to stifle his cheer.
“They called you a coward,” he immediately defends the intention of his actions. Upon hearing his own voice, his shoulders tense and he lets out a frustrated sigh. ‘You’re not here,’ he says silently. ‘You’re only in my head. My God, Courfeyrac, how many hours must have passed between us that your voice is much too distinct.’
Despite his best efforts, he remains accompanied by the presence. “They do not know me the way you do, Pontmercy,” he hears the calming reassurance.
His mouth forms a pained smile. “I pity them, then,” he whispers.
After his best friend’s death, Marius visits the De Courfeyrac mansion in an attempt to clear any dishonor Monsieur De Courfeyrac holds to his son’s name. He unearths the life of Lucian Courfeyrac that he had not known. Convinced that Courfeyrac’s spirit remains in his childhood home, Marius finds himself wishing to prolong their final moments before he must truly accept the departure of his fallen brother.
